Does Turning Off Your Heat at Night Save More Energy?

Many homeowners wonder if they can save more on energy consumption if they turn off the heat at night. You might be a bit tempted to do this yourself, but it can actually be a costly mistake, not just for your home, but for your health as well. Heating and AC repair specialist Armored Heating and Cooling Inc. shares their insight here:

Save More Energy

It may damage your pipes.
If indoor temperatures drop below freezing, your pipes could freeze, causing extensive (and expensive) water damage. Water that freezes inside your pipes will cause them to burst, a reaction much like that of a can of soda left forgotten in the freezer. That’s because water expands when it freezes, and with enough swelling, your pipes will burst, allowing water to escape and flood your home.

You won’t sleep well.
According to doctors, temperatures below 60-67 degrees aren’t ideal for sleeping. As such, turning your heat off at night isn’t just uncomfortable; it can also cause you to lose sleep. With winter nights dropping to nearly 20 degrees Fahrenheit, indoor temperatures will fall quickly as soon as you turn your heat off.

As trusted furnace repair contractors, we know how important a good night’s sleep is, since it makes you feel refreshed whenever you wake up the next morning. If you don’t get good sleep, you could develop any of a number of health issues. You’ll then end up spending money on medication and daily stimulants just so you’ll feel less tired, though it may still affect your productivity at work.

What You Can Do Instead

Not only is it okay to leave certain types of space heaters on all night, this can also save you money. We recommend that you set the temperature of your home at least eight degrees lower for the eight hours or so that you sleep at night. Every degree you lower the thermostat can net you an estimated 1% off your heating bill. That means eight degrees for eight hours a day can save you up to $180 every year!
